Fun Friday May 25th 2012

So I was out of town last week. For the whole week people. Flew out Monday morning – the weekend AFTER graduation weekend. We live in Austin Texas, so not only did I have high school grads, but for those of you who just crawled out from under a rock, Austin is the proud home of UT. That would be “Hook ‘em” Horns.

So upon returning home of course every bath tissue roll was empty. Every hand soap dispenser was empty. Seriously? How do people without a MOM wipe or wash?

Anywho I cleaned up the kitchen – spotless. Went on a few errands and came home to find this:

Really?  To which I had to send my hubby a text:

Poor Moby. He gets blamed for ALOT around our house.  But he is quickly forgiven. How could you not?

Hope you and yours have a FAB Memorial Day Weekend!

How much is too much?

Sometimes I’ll have a client tell me that their friends LOVED their images.  But then they are told ”Wow, your photographer did alot of photoshop”.

Wow indeed.  A dear friend of mine that is a psychologist has a name for that.  I do too.

But it does bring up a discussion topic that I have with 80% of my clients that are out of high school.  When I photograph someone I try to get a connection with that person.  One that shows in the final image.  I personally don’t care for alot of photoshop.   I just spent close to $1,400 just on software upgrades.  Not that I use it alot because 98% of what I edit has nominal changes that a simple ”free” editing software would probably be able to do.  But as a professional I had to have it to correct an image if I make a mistake.

If I miss the best smile a 5 year old has made one afternoon – so be it.  If I miss a toast at a 60th wedding anniversary – that is a different story.  And I would need the pro -edition to correct my raw files in post production.  I’ve worked years to get the image right in camera.

I promote loving who you are.  Who you are NOW.  I grew up being ridiculed for being skinny.  Tall, boney, skinny.  You know – so skinny she has to jump around in the shower to get wet.  Growing up and getting a few wrinkles is ok by me.  I’ve also gotten a little wiser, and have learned to love who I am.  Bones, wrinkles and all.  Which reminds me of one of my favorite poems by Derek Walcott.

Love After Love

The time will come
when, with elation
you will greet yourself arriving
at your own door, in your own mirror
and each will smile at the other’s welcome,

and say, sit here. Eat.
You will love again the stranger who was your self.
Give wine. Give bread. Give back your heart
to itself, to the stranger who has loved you

all your life, whom you ignored
for another, who knows you by heart.
Take down the love letters from the bookshelf,

the photographs, the desperate notes,
peel your own image from the mirror.
Sit. Feast on your life.

I picked a random photo from a recent shoot to illustrate my typical before and after.  The only edit to the first image was to convert it from RAW to jpeg.

You tell me.  I think she looks beautiful in both.

Happy Wednesday!

What’s bugging you?

Ever since Grad school I have been a fanatic about organization.  My sweet hubby would get a chuckle out of that – but it is true.  I am constantly trying to improve everything I am involved in, from work, to chores, to things I love doing.

Notice I have a separate category for chores – they aren’t in my “things I love doing”.  But I’m still trying to get better at them.  The less number of steps to a task, and the simplier the steps the quicker it all goes.

I received a couple of great ideas from a chain email from a friend.  I usually delete chain emails immediately, (sorry) but kind of like “occupant” snail mail that gets tossed into the recycle bin never to make it in the door!  But this email got my attention.  (kinda like that sale from Pottery Barn).

One idea that I LOVE is after you fold bed sheets store the fitted and top sheet IN the matching pillow cases!

I did this but made it even better.  How?  by storing the sheets in the top of the closet of the bedroom they belong too.  My “linen” closet that is in the hallway at the top of the stairs is now my towel closet.

The next idea is a sure hit for anyone with longish hair.  Buy a magnetic strip and attach to an inside drawer of your bathroom cabinets.  No more searching for bobby pins and safety pins.

You can purchase this at any craft store.  Here it is in the bathroom drawer:

Clever.  If you have any organizational tips please pass them on and help a girl out!

Studio Makeover!

The best weekend ever is coming to an end.  It might be because I didn’t cook the entire weekend. (ha! not really, but…maybe a little).

Mark and Adam played in a tournament at Twin Creeks yesterday.  They didn’t play well but still had a great time hitting the links with Adam’s golf team and their Dad’s.  Rach and I took the opportunity to have a girl’s day at the Domain.  Shopping, lunch, more shopping.  Ahhhh.  I love me some Anthropologie and Forever21.

We then picked up the boys and went to the 8:00 showing of ”The Hunger Games”.  It was a little adolescent, but I loved it.  The place was packed with tweens and teens and their reluctant parents!   I can’t wait until the sequel.

I woke this morning with the urgent need to feather my nest.  I was moving furniture around by 8:30, and by 10:00 had furniture in the back yard ready to paint.  Nothing major but I’ve been thinking about a studio makeover for some time and the design came together this morning.

I started painting a pair of mirrors I bought at TJMaxx about 12 years ago.  They were a dark wood stain but look so much better white!

I still need some final touches but the Makeup area is READY!  Here is the before shot:

Here is the after:

I still have to paint the second chair, and add a few accessories but I LOVE how it turned out!

I can’t wait to try it out next weekend!~

Spring Break…

Spring Break was last week and I still have that “I’m behind feeling”.  You know the one.  The one that wakes you up at 3:00 in the morning and all you can do is think about all you need to get done the next day.

One of my goals this year is to spend more time with the kids before they are gone.  One just turned 10 and the other will turn the dreaded 13 in June.  WOW.  To think my husband and I are thinking about college and cars.  Whew…I want to go back to bed.

But instead I’ll clue you in on a quiet extended weekend location.  The Guadalupe river in Canyon Lake, Texas.  We didn’t make it to the lake, spending our time in the treehouse we rented on the Guadalupe.  (Except for the shopping excursion trip Cindy and I worked in to Gruene, how much fishing can a girl take anyways?).

The kids fished, and canoed, and swam.  And played games and skipped rocks.  Some of the parents fished during the day, we talked about nothing drinking a nice blend at night, and sat quietly drinking our coffee by the water every morning.  It was heaven.   And only 90 minutes from Austin.  We will be back!

The family next door was staying for month!  They let us borrow their canoe.  What a hit.

Happy Wednesday!

I have come to L.O.V.E. surprises.  I was so overjoyed by one recently that it has taken me over a month to be able to talk about it without crying.  Seriously.  I’m like Diane Keeton in Something’s Gotta Give (which me & my daughter love and watch often).

My cousin Val crocheted a few items for my expanding photography business.  I was expecting them in the mail.   I wasn’t expecting the big box I received.  LOADED with cool items she had made, and some that were sentimental favorites she knew I would want.  But what really set me off into a crying jag was the hand written notes she wrote for all of the items.

The suitcase that held all the precious items was what I pulled out of the box first.  With the following note:

“I remember when you first saw this suitcase. You wanted it so bad, and I was thinking about when I bought it that I wanted to use it to store pictures in. Well I found another suitcase at an estate auction of a friend of mines grandmother.  It’s not as in good condition as this one but it will store the photos just fine.  So…this is my gift to you. I know that you will use it for more things and will enjoy it.”

The crocheted items are so so cute.  A turtle shell & hat.

The mermaid set with headband is so precious.  I can’t WAIT to find a baby girl to photograph!

And these glasses with the following note:

“I can’t remember the exact time but I’m thinking that when Papa Tallent died and different things were being gone thru Granny came across these glasses of hers.  For some reason I thought they looked so cool.   I even remember seeing some photos of her wearing them.  So…I was thinking how cool would it be to use them as photoprops, either lying around or someone wearing them, or even just for you to have to display in a cabinet.  So these are a gift from me to you – via – Granny.  I know you will cherish them as much as I have.”

I also received beige netting, blue & aqua gold blankets with hat, and a turquoise blanket. These are so cute!  White and pink fuzzy little pods to put a curled up infant in.  The little black top hat is adorable!

If you would like to order any of these items you can contact Valerie on her FB page!

Not too strong…Not to weak…Just right!

I received a gift card to Pottery Barn from a dear friend and client several months back.  I love Pottery Barn, and like most of my friends can spend literally hours in that store.  I had been searching for just the right thing to buy.  Today I found it!

If you follow me on facebook you know Santa brought us a Keurig coffee maker for Christmas.  Well because I was THAT good.  (not really, our old coffee pot bit the dust).   As much as I love the hot brewed on demand cup of Joe, the Keurig can be a little strong for my taste.  A regular coffee cup doesn’t allow for the correct amount of milk/coffee ratio.  (Only coffee lovers will get that).  So I needed a cup that was taller but not heavy or too macho – but not girly either (my husband is the machoiest of macho).  I found these! Aren’t they great!

And my friend and I can enjoy them together over a cup of coffee.  Not too strong, not to weak, just right!

When I saw this book I knew I had to have it.  “Living in Tuscany”.

When we dream what could be more perfect?

Sorry I’ve taken a break from my Small town Tuesdays.  I hope to get those posting again real soon.   I have a new territory, so stay tuned.

Happy Tuesday!
